Field/harvest crew member positions are very physically demanding with lots of variability in day to day duties. We make sure to have fun everyday, but this work is not easy. You will be expected to work through difficult weather and environmental conditions such as wind, excessive heat, rain, mosquitoes, snakes and spiders. With that in mind, you will also be surrounded by beauty and magic! You will be part of an exciting agricultural hub at the Treehouse Farm Collective, which is also home to Artemis Flower Farm, Ver de Terre Vermicompost and The Tool Library.
Job Purpose:
Support the owners in the daily work of running the vegetable farm
Duties:
The field/harvest crew member works with the owners, Cody Jurbala and Melissa Ogilvie, to grow and harvest vegetables for restaurants, CSA, farm stand and wholesale customers. Primary tasks include, greenhouse work such as seeding and watering, bed preparation, transplanting, weeding (both by hand and with hand tools), pruning/tending crops, watering/irrigating, harvesting, washing and packing produce for weekly sales outlets. Other tasks may include, setting up for CSA pick up, washing harvest totes, keeping spaces clean and organized.operating farm machinery and equipment, delivering produce to restaurant/wholesale clients, care for and move farm’s small flock of chickens and sheep
These tasks require lifting and moving heavy items, bending/squatting/kneeling/standing for long periods of time. Good physical condition, stamina, and self motivation are essential for this position.
Field/harvest crew members are expected to maintain a positive attitude during difficult working conditions, be passionate and knowledgeable about organic vegetable production, have the ability to communicate issues clearly and seek solutions, be punctual, be comfortable working with a team as well as independently and have a critical interest in achieving the farm's goals.
Hours:
Full Time, 40 hours per week, as early as 6am to as late as 6pm, Monday - Friday
Possible other days scheduled in advance with Employer.
Possible later workdays on CSA pick-up days (Wednesday)
Opportunities for more hours may arise during the height of harvest season - May through October.
Employment starts March 3rd and ends November 19th
Compensation:
$18-$20 per hour based on experience
Vegetables to take home weekly
Required Experience and Qualifications:
At least 1 season working on a commercial vegetable farm
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
Ability to engage in physically demanding work everyday
Desire to learn and remember crop names/varieties, plant spacing, harvest/washing/packing techniques and follow standard operating procedures
Ability to follow instructions and be detail oriented
Strong communication skills
Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with a team
Reliable transportation
